Every Child - Who we are
Newham schools are performing strongly and pupils are making excellent academic progress overall, with significant improvements compared to national averages over the last five years. The Every Child programme provides valuable opportunities to compliment and support the core curriculum and pupil attainment.
The programme provides life enhancing experiences which add to children’s self-worth, well-being and educational achievement, with recent studies suggesting that students who engage with the arts do better in standardised tests such as SATS.
The promotion of arts and culture brings far reaching benefits to wider communities too. As a recent whitepaper shows, the arts can contribute to an increased sense of community cohesion and an improvement in health outcomes.
The Every Child Programme has four elements:
Every Child a Musician
This programme delivers four years of free weekly music tuition to children in Newham’s primary schools. The programme buys each participating child a musical instrument such as a violin, guitar or a keyboard. Last year the programme expanded to include teaching in Years 3 and 4 for the first time and delivered more than 360,000 music lessons in total.
Every Child a Theatre Goer
This year, the programme will get almost 5,500 young people aged between 11 and 15, to experience the theatre. They will enjoy a range of performances from Shakespeare at the Globe, Cymbaline at the Barbican, contemporary theatre and the National and pantomime. Additionally, more than 5,000 10 to 11 year olds will see live performances of Romeo and Juliet at their local theatre, performed by a cast from the prestigious National Theatre.
Every Child a Sports Person
This programme offers the opportunity to try 20 different sports. Annually around 3,600 children from year 7, from 19 different secondary schools participate in the Every Child a Sportsperson programme. Over the last four years, an estimated 16,000 school children have enjoyed sports taster days for activities such as Boxing, Taekwondo and Zumba.
Every Child a Chess Player
This year, over 1,500 pupils participated in chess lessons and chess clubs each week, from more than 20 different primary schools across Newham. As a result, Newham has entered the Junior Four Nations Chess League and children and adults from Newham’s diverse communities play chess in clubs across the borough. During December 2016, the organisation Chess in Communities awarded our chess club members 57 gold and silver medals for their achievements in the game.
